In what will hopefully be a national trend, NYC's Film Forum is hosting a retrospective (release) of the 1960s features (and some shorts) of Jean-Luc Godard. A few unexpected highlights include:
- A new 35mm print of Vivre Sa vie -- Criterion DVD coming soon?
- One screening (but one more than predicted) of Dziga Vertov Group's Un Film comme les autres
- Sympathy for the Devil, as opposed to One Plus One (unfortunately)
- Made in USA, after a rumor that licensing rights kept it from screening in the states. Attendees, please pay special attention to the opening logos of this one. Yes, it's Studio Canal, but is it also Janus?
One only hopes 70s, 80s and 90s retrospectives of Godard will follow. Rarities like Numero Deux, Sauve qui peut (la vie), King Lear, and Nouvelle Vague deserve just as much attention, if not more, than many in his 60s oeuvre. And maybe the current thirst for Godard is the perfect time for Gaumont and others to take another chance at selling these hard-to-find goodies to the growing market.
