Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare: Game Review

Call of Duty 4

As I had hoped I received Call of Duty 4 for the XBox 360 for Christmas. I have been a huge fan of the Call of Duty series but I was especially excited about this one for two reasons.First, I played COD 1-3 on Gamecube so I couldn’t wait to try one out on the 360. Second, unlike previous COD titles which are all based on World War II, COD 4 was based on Modern Warfare. The idea being you get to play real-world scenarios, fighting terrorists in Iraq etc. All of the COD titles have been extremely high quality so I couldn’t wait to see their take on modern warfare.

I finished the game over the weekend. I have to say I was not disappointed. I probably could have had it done sooner but, I was enjoying it so much I didn’t want to rush it. The graphics and realism were awesome and I would have been crushed if they hadn’t been. It was loads of fun to get to play in scenarios which look like they had been pulled straight from CNN. I also enjoyed having M-16 with laser sights and night vision goggles instead of an Old Springfield rifle like in the earlier CODs. My favorite chapter was when you get to be the gunner on an AC-130 gunship covering the extraction of the Special Ops team. I’ve already replayed that scenario about 6 times. It looked and felt just like similar videos I have seen from real gunsight cameras. Other than in a few particular spots the game is not exceptionally hard on normal difficulty. On veteran difficulty though a message pops up and tells you that you will die. Once you get past the initial chapters, yeh, they’re pretty much right.

Now while I loved this game, I do have a few criticisms. First there was no Coop mode. I’m one of those old school gamers who, when I play with other people enjoy having them physically present in the room with me. The game supports multiplayer both online and local but only in player vs. player. How much harder is it to add this to the campaign mode? We played player vs. player for a few hours but the number of maps it comes with is limited and so this gets a little tiring after the second night. Second the campaign was a little too short for me. I enjoyed this game so much I wish they had extended the number of scenarios. My third complaint is that in campaign mode you only got to play a US Marine or an SAS trooper. In most of the other COD games you seemed to get a little more variety. Finally, while there were many elements of modern warfare which were missing from the game like, advanced comms, sensor systems, and UAVs. In leaving these elements out of the game, they missed some of the key components which make modern warfare different from WWII era or even the warfare of a decade ago. At the end of the day this had little impact on the game play but it nettled me just a little bit.

Now having vented on those few items I will still say that COD 4 was an awesome game. Probably the best COD yet. I would definitely play it again (and in fact I probably will). I can’t wait for COD 5 to come out.
