This year’s Emmy would be held on September 16 (Sunday). The Emmys are considered one of the most coveted honors in Hollywood for television. The nominees are:

Outstanding Comedy
Entourage (1st nomination)
The Office (2 nominations, 1 win)
30 Rock (1st nomination)
Two and a Half Men (2 nominations)
Ugly Betty (1st nomination)

I’ve seen three of the five noms so I can’t really say which one is the best. I love 30 Rock. It’s now showing on Starworld. I hope 30 Rock wins! I am not that keen on Two and a Half Men, nor have I caught on the Betty fever but I know Ugly Betty is a good show. The Office had won before and it’s facing stiff competition from Ugly Betty which got the Globe for Best Comedy.

Will Win: Ugly Betty
Should Win: 30 Rock

Outstanding Drama
Boston Legal (1st nomination)
Grey’s Anatomy (2 nominations)
Heroes (1 nomination)
House MD (2 nominations)
The Sopranos (7 nominations, 1 win)

I have never caught any of Boston Legal or The Sopranos. I am a fan of Heroes and House MD and have seen a couple of episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Since this would be The Sopranos last hurrah, they might go out with a bang. I am hoping for freshman series Heroes to take the cake though.

Will Win: The Sopranos
Should Win: Heroes

Outstanding TV Movie
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
9/11: The Twin Towers
Longford
The Ron Clark Story
Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy

No comment. I have not seen any of them. But I am rooting for Ron Clark or Mastectomy because I love Chandler, I mean, Matthew Perry and Sarah Chalke (Elliot from Scrubs).

Outstanding Miniseries
Broken Trail
Prime Suspect: The Final Act
The Starter’s Wife

Again, no comment. The Prime Suspect franchise, and Helen Mirren, has been nominated a lot and winning. So I want someone else to get it. I love Debra Messing so I am supporting The Starter’s Wife.

Outstanding Lead Actor (Comedy)
Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock (6 nominations, 1st nomination for 30 Rock)
Steve Carell – The Office (2 nominations)
Ricky Gervais – Extras (6 nominations, 1 win for The Office, 1st nomination for Extras)
Tony Shalhoub – Monk (5 nominations, 3 wins)
Charlie Sheen – Two and a Half Men (2 nominations)

Alec Baldwin is in favor to win. He’s already bagged the Golden Globe and the SAG. Frankly, I agree. I love his work in 30 Rock.

Will Win: Alec Baldwin
Should Win: Alec Baldwin.

Outstanding Lead Actor (Drama)
James Gandolfini – The Sopranos (6 nominations, 3 wins)
Hugh Laurie – House MD (2 nominations)
Denis Leary – Rescue Me (3 nominations)
James Spader – Boston Legal (3 nominations, 1 win for Boston Legal, 1 win for The Practice)
Kiefer Sutherland – 24 (10 Emmy nominations, 2 wins)

James Gandolfini is the behemoth here. 3 wins and this is his final nomination for The Sopranos. I am supporting Hugh Laurie for his Dr House. He has two Globes already but has yet to get the Emmy.

Will Win: James Gandolfini
Should Win: Hugh Laurie

Outstanding Lead Actor (TV Movie/Miniseries)
Jim Broadbent – Longford (2 nominations)
Robert Duvall – Broken Trail (4 nominations)
William H Macy – Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King (9 nominations, 2 wins)
Matthew Perry – The Ron Clark Story (4 nominations)
Tom Selleck – Jesse Stone: Sea Change (7 nominations, 1 win)

I haven’t seen any of these and I am standing behind Matthew Perry. His work in FRIENDS was not rewarded and IMO, he was the funniest one in the male bunch.

Outstanding Lead Actress (Comedy)
America Ferrera – Ugly Betty (1st nomination)
Tina Fey – 30 Rock (4 nominations, 1 win, 1st acting nom)
Felicity Huffman – Desperate Housewives (2 nominations, 1 win)
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss – The New Adventures of Old Christine (9 nominations, 2 wins – 1 for Seinfeld)
Mary-Louise Parker – Weeds (4 nominations, 1 win for Angels in America)

Ooh, tough category. Like Alec Baldwin, America Ferrera’s been sweeping all the major awards already so she clearly is the favorite to win. However, last year’s winner, Elaine, I mean Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is in contention as well as Felicity Huffman, the winner the year before that. However, I am rooting for Tina Fey whose solid sarcastic work in 30 Rock had me in stitches.

Will Win: America Ferrera
Should Win: Tina Fey

Outstanding Lead Actress (Drama)
Patricia Arquette – Medium (2 nominations, 1 win)
Minnie Driver – The Riches (1st nomination)
Edie Falco – The Sopranos (6 nominations, 3 wins)
Sally Fields – Brothers & Sisters (7 nominations, 2 wins – for Sybil and ER)
Mariska Hargitay – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (4 nominations, 1 win)
Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer (2 nominations)

Mariska Hargitay won last year and Patricia Arquette won the year before. However, since it is The Sopranos swan song, Edie Falco might be receiving her 4th Emmy statuette.

Will Win: Edie Falco
Should Win: Kyra Sedgwick

Outstanding Lead Actress (TV Movie/Miniseries)
Queen Latifah – Life Support (1st nomination)
Debra Messing – The Starter Wife (6 nominations, 1 win)
Helen Mirren – Prime Suspect: The Final Act (9 nominations, 3 wins)
Mary-Louise Parker – The Robber Bride (4 nominations)
Gena Rowlands – What If God Were the Sun? (7 nominations, 3 wins)

Helen Mirren had just swept last year’s major awards for The Queen and she has been winning for the Prime Suspect series, so she is a major contender. But I am supporting Grace Adler, I mean, Debra Messing.

Will Win: Helen Mirren
Should Win: Helen Mirren

Outstanding Supporting Actor (Comedy)
Jon Cryer – Two and a Half Men (2 nominations)
Kevin Dillon – Entourage (1st nomination)
Neil Patrick Harris – How I Met Your Mother (1st nomination)
Jeremy Piven – Entourage (3 nominations, 1 win)
Rainn Wilson – The Office (1st nomination)

Jeremy Piven won last year and might just repeat his win, mostly because the Emmys like to award honors to the same person again and again and again. But I am betting on Neil Patrick Harris from How I Met Your Mother.

Will Win: Jeremy Piven
Should Win: Neil Patrick Harris

Outstanding Supporting Actor (Drama)
Michael Emerson – Lost (2 nominations, 1 win – for The Practice)
Micheal Imperioli – The Sopranos (5 nominations, 1 win)
T.R. Knight – Grey’s Anatomy (1st nomination)
Masi Oka – Heroes (1st nomination)
Terry O’Quinn – Lost (2 nominations)
William Shatner – Boston Legal (5 nominations, 2 wins – 1 for The Practice, 1 for Boston Legal)

Michael Imperioli is riding The Sopranos’ wave. T.R. Knight has also been in the news as of late (some even say that he got a nomination because of all the publicity). William Shatner had won before for Boston Legal. I’d like for Masi Oka to win because he is cute and he was the best one amongst the Heroes.

Will Win: Michael Imperioli
Should Win: Masi Oka

Outstanding Supporting Actor (TV Movie/Miniseries)
Edward Asner – The Christmas Card (16 nominations, 7 wins)
Thomas Haden Church – Broken Trail (1st nomination)
Joe Mantegna – The Starter Wife (3 nominations)
Aidan Quinn – Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2 nominations)
August Schellenberg – Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (1st nomination)

I haven’t seen any of these. Nor do I have a favorite.

Outstanding Supporting Actress (Comedy)
Conchata Ferrell – Two and a Half Men (3 nominations)
Jenna Fischer – The Office (1st nomination)
Elizabeth Perkins – Weeds (2 nominations)
Jaime Pressly – My Name is Earl (2 nominations)
Holland Taylor – Two and a Half Men (5 nominations, 1 win – for The Practice)
Vanessa Williams – Ugly Betty (1st nomination)

Vanessa Williams is riding the coattail of Ugly Betty’s colossal award sweeps. If America Ferrera and Ugly Betty wins, Vanessa Williams might just bag this one too. I am in favor of Jaime Pressly to win though.

Will Win: Vanessa Williams
Should Win: Jaime Pressly

Outstanding Supporting Actress (Drama)
Lorraine Bracco – The Sopranos (4 nominations)
Rachel Griffiths – Brothers & Sisters (3 nominations)
Katherine Heigl – Grey’s Anatomy (1 nomination)
Sandra Oh – Grey’s Anatomy (3 nominations)
Aida Turturro – The Sopranos (2 nominations)
Chandra Wilson – Grey’s Anatomy (2 nominations)

Lorraine Bracco. Especially since she has not won yet for her role in The Sopranos. The Grey’s Anatomy girls would split the votes amongst themselves so I guess the frontrunners would be either Soprano girls or Rachel Griffiths (who did not get an Emmy for her Six Feet Under role).

Will Win: Lorraine Bracco
Should Win: Lorraine Bracco

Outstanding Supporting Actress (TV Movie/Miniseries)
Toni Collette – Tsunami: The Aftermath (1st nomination)
Judy Davis – The Starter Wife (10 nominations, 2 wins)
Samantha Morton – Longford (1st nomination)
Anna Paquin – Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (1st nomination)
Greta Scacchi – Broken Trail (2 nominations, 1 win)

Again, I haven’t seen any of this. But with a category filled with Oscar nominees/winners, it’s really hard to call a single winner. I love Toni Collette but I want Anna Paquin to win, mostly because she has not won anything since her win for the Supporting Actress Oscar when she was 12.

Will Win: Dunno
Should Win: Anna Paquin

Outstanding Reality Competition Program
The Amazing Race (5 nominations, 4 wins)
American Idol (5 nominations)
Dancing with the Stars (2 nominations)
Project Runway (3 nominations)
Top Chef (1st nomination)

The Amazing Race always wins this category. I’d like to see some other show get it this time. I prefer it to be American Idol.

Will Win: The Amazing Race
Should Win: American Idol

Outstanding Animated Program
Avatar: The Last Airbender (1st nomination)
Robot Chicken (1st nomination)
The Simpsons (multiple wins)
South Park (7 nominations)
SpongeBob SquarePants (5 nominations)

I haven’t Avatar or Robot Chicken but I liked the talent behind Robot Chicken. The Simpsons would win this, especially since the movie came out and got strong box office receipts.

Will Win: The Simpsons
Should Win: Robot Chicken
