I’ve already said it many times, but I’ll say it again anyway… Dragonball is the next Speed Racer. A property whose current popularity and potential audience is being drastically overestimated with source material that does not lend itself to becoming a decent live action movie. This movie will tank.

Having said that… damn I’d take “Mal” to dinner anywhere she wanted to go and whenever she’d agree to be seen in public with me (which probably means never). Thanks to Jarred for the pics. There is a water mark on the images, but I can’t find a corresponding site. If you know where they came from, please drop me a note and let me know.

Thumbs Up is not always a Good Thing

I thought I would post this as part of my worldly education since a number of our loyal readers find us internationally ignorant because we say its OK for Goku to be played by a white guy and that I had never heard of Korean pop sensation Rain. The article talks about Seven Innocent Gestures that can get you Killed Overseas. Sounds like a Borat movie Title, but the article has very little to do with movies. Except this part:

Cracked.com says this about the common “Thumbs Up” gesture:

What you think you are saying:
“Ayyyyy! I’m the fuckin’ Fonz!”What you are actually saying:
“Ayyyyy! I’m going to jam my thumb in your anus!”

What the hell?
It’s not just the Middle East. This seemingly universal gesture is also hideously offensive in West Africa and South America, whose citizens would doubtless get really confused if they ever watched Ebert and Roeper. “This movie is great, Bill! So great that I’d like to anally rape it with my thumb!”

The thumbs-up sign has been confusing people for thousands of years. Contrary to Hollywood legend, Roman gladiators were not spared by a thumbs-up, but by a hidden thumb. If the origins of both gestures are linked, we can only assume this meant, “Do not kill the prisoner, he seems the perfect solution to the emperor’s arthritic finger.”

I found this very amusing and despite the popular belief of a very small minority I am fascinated with other cultures and their etiquette.

Some of the things we do or say in North America (or even smaller subcultures) are just as bizarre to other cultures, but with the global dominance of the Hollywood machine I am not surprised that most North Americans presume these commonplace gestures would have the same meaning somewhere else.

I wonder if “flipping the bird” is somehow considered a polite gesture somewhere?

The Ebert and Roeper of Botswana give this movie 3 flailing middle fingers and a steaming pile of fresh deification. In other words… we loved it!

Much of the griping about the Dragonball movie have revolved around two things. Bloggers incorrectly calling it “Dragonball Z the movie” and the casting of a white guy as Goku.

Firstly I side with the people griping about calling it Dragonball Z. Yup, there is no Z in the title. Some confusion has come forward as elements in the story arc in the second volume of the story (denoted by the Z) will be in this film.

Secondly, casting Goku as a white guy. First let me remind you that Goku was not Asian. The story is based around an ancient Chinese legend, and may have originally been marketed for the Asians, but the ethnicity of Goku was not Asian in any form. He was an alien. They guy had a tail. He is a Saiyan.

Other little known fact, is that the word Saiyan is an anagram of the Japanese word Yasai which means vegetable. Also, the full blooded Saiyans in the show were named for Vegetable sounding names. (Nappa, Vegeta, Raditz, Broly, Paragus and Tullece) Just something funny that I tripped across.

So with all that said, I wanted to show this image that shows some of the main characters of the upcoming film scanned from Roadshow Magazine.

A Better Goku

Earlier I released a pretty bad scan of Justin Chatwin as Goku. A better version of the picture has been released, I have to admit I'm a bit mroe impressed with it. I think Chatwin can pull it off, and I like the attempt to make his hair similar to Goku's. But I can't decide yet if it's some funky, cool, futuristic style or a bad case of bed-head yet.
dbthemovie.com reports that the glowing ball floating above his hands is actually a dragonball. Not bad. Click to enlarge:

Earlier this week we posted an image from a Japanese magazine giving us our first look at Goku from the Dragonball Movie.

The source website shows a scanned image from another Asian magazine, but I have to say that this actor looks more like Goku in the above images. I really have no clue who Justin Chatwin is. A quick look on IMDB reveals that he was in an episode of Smallville that I have watched as well as a role in Baby Geniuses 2: Superbabies. Which I did not see.

Emmy Rossum however, is just CRAMMED with serious talent and scads of appeal. And this picture just makes her look as cute as ever. If anything would make me want to watch a Dragonball movie (notice I didnt say Dragonball Z movie) then it would be her.

Does this aleviate some of the concerns voiced in the comments of the previous post, or do you still think he doesn’t look like Goku??

When a live-action adaptation of the fight-centric anime Dragonball was announced, there were some concerns. Was there enough hair product on real, non-anime Earth to support Goku's ridiculous coiffure? Would fans get too upset if the character's orange gi were replaced with a t-shirt with some Japanese characters on it, showing an Abercrombie-level understanding of Asian culture? Dragonball Z is going to be the next Speed Racer. I think the potential audience for this film is being drastically over estimated by a lot of people, but I guess we’ll know for sure once the film opens. On the topic of Dragonball Z, the good folks over at ComingSoon have posted up the first picture of Goku (Justin Chatwin) from the film. So what do you think?
