This is how they're marketing Street Fighter? A petulant youth staring at me like I'm her father who showed up to pick her up from the mall too early, embarrassing her in front of all her friends? That's awful.

Actually, come to think of it, shame might be the best way to sell a movie to much of Japan's male population, so good job, Team Street Fighter.

It still makes no sense to me that JCVD looks good. It seems so desperate and easy, Jean-Claude Van Damme agreeing to play himself, mocking his career--like so many scandal-makers doing SNL cameos to win back the public--but somehow it works. Even with this brief trailer, Van Damme makes himself entirely sympathetic and surprisingly funny, and I come away really wanting to like the aging action star--and desperately hoping rumors of Universal Solider III aren't true. Please don't go from JCVD to that, Jean-Claude. I only took you back because you promised not to drink anymore, and doing another Universal Solider is like running straight to the terrible action movie liquor store.

If there was an announcement made today that Sam Raimi was going to direct a movie from a screenplay written by The Coen Brothers (starring Bruce Campbell, no less), I don’t think there’s a film geek alive who wouldn’t lose their mind. Based on their impressive filmographies and the cult followings that both have amassed, a collaboration of this magnitude would be a cinematic event like no other. But what if I told you that such a movie already existed, and not only did it bomb at the box office, but still remains to this day, exceedingly hard to find on DVD?

Back at the beginning of their careers, Sam Raimi and The Coen Brothers were all a part of the same scene of up-and-coming Midwest filmmakers, and Joel Coen landed one of his first film gigs as assistant editor on The Evil Dead. A couple of years later, The Coen Brothers had written and directed their first film, Blood Simple, and Raimi was developing his next movie. He asked The Coens to write the script for him, and the result was Crimewave.

Originally titled The XYZ Murders, this was Raimi’s first time working with an actual studio, and it turned out to be a bit of a disaster. Raimi described it as the worst time of his life, and Bruce Campbell has not so fond memories of a miserable winter shoot in Detroit and all kinds of studio interference, as told in his book If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor:

“Crimewave was a lesson about abject failure — no matter how you slice it, the film was a dog, and everyone involved can pretty much line up and take forty whacks. As filmmakers, we failed to execute a misguided concept and our studio refused us the benefit of any doubt.”

The movie follows two psychotic hitmen who double as exterminators (played by Brion James and Paul Smith). They are hired by the co-owner of a security company to eliminate his partner, who is trying to sell the business behind his back to Renaldo aka “The Heel” (Bruce Campbell). Along the way a number of people accidentally cross paths with the hitmen, leading to a series of goofy chase scenes and cartoony murders, until they encounter a nerdy security technician (Reed Birney) who is trying to win the heart of a girl (Sheree J. Wilson).

Raimi is known for his love of The Three Stooges, but I have never seen it shine through quite like it does in Crimewave. The movie is filled with all kinds of weird slapstick moments and cartoon sound effects. There are plenty of POV shots and silly set pieces, culminating in a pretty epic high-speed three car chase sequence. Some of the stunts are impressive, while others are pretty campy and fake-looking.

This is Sam Raimi at his most hyper real, and I can see it turning off a lot of viewers. Anyone who disliked the dance scene in the jazz club from Spider-Man 3, for example, will probably hate this movie. I still had a lot of fun to watching all the camera tricks and the hammy performances from Bruce Campbell et al, however the movie itself is very nearly incoherent.

It’s hard to say how much influence The Coen Brothers actually had on this movie. Their quirky sense of humour seems to permeate some of the proceedings, although the dialogue itself is certainly not on the same level of cleverness that they are known for today. The Coens would go on to direct Hudsucker Proxy afterward, which Sam Raimi co-wrote and Bruce Campbell starred in (incidentally, Crimewave also has a prison in it called “Hudsucker Penitentiary”). Raimi would return to his independent roots to shoot Evil Dead 2.

I can certainly understand why Crimewave has been sort of abandoned, and left hidden from the public eye. It’s not a particularly brilliant movie, and it’s easily one of the weakest projects that any of these great filmmakers have been involved in. I can also understand why the studio execs might have been a little bit unhappy with the final product, especially considering that it went over budget (the Columbia Pictures logo at the start of the film seems very out of place). Still, this is a movie that will certainly be of interest to hardcore Sam Raimi fans, and it has its share of fun moments. If you can get your hands on a copy without paying through the nose, I’d still recommend giving it a chance.

with Kam Williams

Headline: It’s Miller Time!

Born on October 7, 1978, Los Angeles native Omar Benson Miller started acting professionally while attending San Jose State University, where he majored in Radio, Television Film and Theater Arts with a minor in African-American Studies. The 6’ 6” gentle giant made his screen debut in the Walt Disney drag comedy Sorority Boys.

Upon completing work on his bachelor’s degree, he landed a lead role in Eminem’s semi-autobiographical bio-pic 8 Mile. He has since appeared in over a dozen movies, most notably opposite 50-Cent in Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Halle Berry and in Things We Lost in the Fire, Richard Gere and J-Lo in Shall We Dance, and Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall in Lucky You.

He’s even tried his hand at writing, directing and producing, making Gordon Glass, a low-budget family comedy in which he handled the title role. On television, Omar has been on such shows as The West Wing, Law & Order and Sex Love & Secrets.

Here, the versatile young talent talks about his two pictures currently in theaters, The Express & Spike Lee’s Miracle at St. Anna.

KW: Hey Omar, thanks for the time.

OM: Yeah. No doubt! How’re you doing?

KW: Fine, and you?

OM: I’m good.

KW: What interested you in playing Sam Train in Miracle at St. Anna?

OM: What didn’t interest me in playing Sam Train? He’s like a superhero, except in real life. I had read the book when it initially came out, and I felt, “Wow! This is exactly something I’d like to do.” And then the opportunity came up while we were shooting The Express. I got this text message saying Spike Lee was doing a World War II drama and, yeah man, I did everything I could to get in front of that guy. And he picked me. He said, “I want you to do it.” Then he put me on this tight regimen where I had to lose about 50 pounds in 9 weeks.

KW: Whoa!

OM: If you see both movies, you’ll see I’m a blubberous lineman in The Express, and a much less blubbery soldier in Miracle at St. Anna. What’s interesting is that both these films tell stories that needed to be told, in my opinion, because you never learn anything in school or during Black History month about the Buffalo Soldiers or the African-American military campaign during World War II.

KW: I agree. And what attracted you to the role of Rob Brown’s buddy Jack in The Express?

OM: When I read that book, I was embarrassed that I had never heard of Ernie Davis, although I knew about Jim Brown, Floyd Little and the Syracuse University legacy. And the more research that I did, watching film and reading about him, the more intrigued I became. I realized he was a humanitarian and an American hero whose story deserved to be told. And I think it’s going to inspire millions, because people are going to see this film and love it. I’ve seen it with audiences four or five times and not once has it gotten a bad response. People love this movie.

KW: Did you have an interest in acting as a child?

OM: No, none whatsoever. I played sports. The acting thing was just a direct blessing from the Lord, because I lost my discipline to play sports, and I had this really cool professor grab me and kind of take me under his wing, and the ball just started rolling. Another professor introduced me to my first agent, and the next thing you know, I got to start doing films. It was great!

KW: What would you say was your big break, 8 Mile?

OM: Without question. After 8 Mile came out and blew up, the ball has been rolling ever since.

KW: At 6’ 6” tall, what types of roles are you looking for?

OM: The type that aren’t specifically written for guys who are 6’ 6”. Normally, I try to stay away from playing security guard type characters, the stereotypical, big man fare. And I’ve been pretty blessed, man, and successful at getting out of the box.

KW: Bookworm Troy Johnson wants to know, what was the last book you read?

OM: The most memorable book I read recently was Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice. It was a departure for her from her normal evil vampire type fare. This book delved into the possibilities of what it might have been like to watch Jesus as a child. It was very interesting.

KW: What did you think of the job James McBride did in adapting Miracle at St. Anna, having read the book?

OM: Spike’s vision for the film definitely burst out of the beauty of the book. But I think it’s a different animal. It’s tricky, because it’s very difficult to jam a novel like that into two and a half hours.

KW: Do you think it helped in this case that the author also wrote the screenplay.

OM: Without question. From what I understand, he and Spike would go through it together ten pages at a time.

KW: “Realtor to the Stars” Jimmy Bayan asks: Where in L.A. do you live?

OM: I live in Glendale now. It’s actually a really nice community. I hadn’t been hip to it. I just stumbled upon it by accident because a buddy of mine needed me to pick him up out there. And I was like, “Gee, this is nice.” Around the same time, I was blessed enough to be able to buy a house, so I moved over there.

KW: Where in L.A. did you grow up?

OM: Before I left to go to college, I was living in Orange County, Anaheim Hills. And prior to that I was in Long Beach. That’s where I spent most of my childhood and where my mother and brothers are now.

KW: Music maven Heather Covington is curious about what music you’re listening to nowadays?

OM: I’m listening to the new Beck, Modern Guilt, and to a buddy of mine named Johnny Fair who sings soul, R&B. And I’ve been listening to that Citizen Cope album. I can’t wait for his new one to come out. He’s more of an independent, undergroundy kind of guy.

KW: The Tasha Smith question: Are you ever afraid?

OM: Of course.

KW: The Columbus Short question: Are you happy?

OM: I’m joyous! And that’s more important, because happiness is fleeting.

KW: Is there a question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would?

OM: [Laughs] No, you guys are pretty thorough.

KW: What message do you hope people will take away from The Express?

OM: I hope they come away with the inspiration that you can overcome any obstacles in your path. Ernie Davis had the cards stacked against him completely, yet he was able to accomplish great things through perseverance, courage, diligence and his own grounding though his family and his faith. I sincerely hope the film challenges people to take an introspective look at their lives and see how they fit into the world at large, and see what kinds of positive changes they can make, because in researching for this film we didn’t find one person who had met Ernie who hadn’t been positively influenced by him. Not one. And I think this comes out on the screen. So, even in death, he was still triumphant. That’s admirable.

KW: How do you want to be remembered.

OM: As a righteous dude!

KW: Thanks again for the interview, Omar. I appreciate the time and I’m expecting bigger things from you in the future.

OM: Hey, I appreciate that.

Under the category of “Why the hell are they even making this movie” comes the files of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. I’ll would be shaking my head trying to understand the logic behind this even if the movie was focused around either of the 2 main characters in the game, Ryu or Ken… but building the movie around one of the second tier characters like Chun Li is baffling to me.

Yes, I understand that Kristin Kreuk is hot beyond words. Yes, I understand that her stint on Smallville has given her a little name recognition. But come on. Is anyone (in any real numbers) actually going to run out to see this thing? I seriously won’t be surprised if this project never even makes it to wide release. I could be wrong on that… I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised.

Anyway, the good folks over at MovieWeb have pointed out that the official Japanese website for the film has now quasi-lanuched (I’ll never understand why studios launch websites that don’t have anything on them yet… but that’s a topic for another post) as well as the first poster.

The other day the first few shots of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes hit the web (which didn’t look like what I thought they would, but I have no idea of the context of the pictures at this point so really can’t say anything about this yet), and today Mr. Ryan sent me what appears to be the first pics of Jude Law (one hell of an actor… probably even better than Robert Downey Jr) as Doctor Watson.

Law is rockin the stache! I’ve got to tell ya folks, this is a movie I’m just dying to see. Not just because of the solid cast. Not just because one of my favorite directors, Guy Ritchie, is helming it. But mostly because I think Sherlock Holmes is one of the coolest and most interesting fictional characters across all mediums ever. Damn I wish it was coming out next week.

Weekend box office results!

1. Beverly Hills Chihuahua - $17.5 million. Number one. For the second straight week. Nice job, everyone.

2. Quarantine - $14.2 million, which is worse than the talking dog movie's second week.

3. Body of Lies - $13.1 million--way less than the second week of the movie where dogs talk.

4. Eagle Eye - $11 million, suggesting the stars of this film were probably humans rather than, say, talking dogs in their second week of a movie's run.

5. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - $6.5 million. Infinite playlist? More like infinitely less popular than another week of talking dogs!

Kurt Vonnegut’s landmark anti-war novel “Slaughterhouse-Five” is written in the style of the Tralfamadorian aliens who view all time as simultaneous and pre-determined, the author notes in his brilliant opening chapter. With no future or past or present, they are able to concentrate on this moment or that moment, but unable to change their behavior in any one of them. It’s something of an anti-narrative, a structure which Vonnegut himself calls “short and jumbled and jangled.”

But could it possibly work as a movie for ALL audiences? (The book was previously adapted in 1972, won the jury prize at Cannes, but failed to connect with viewers.)

Yes, insists Guillermo Del Toro, who lists “Slaughterhouse-Five” among his many possible post-“Hobbit” projects. The trick, he says, is to marry modern techniques in digital wizardry with new narrative possibilities.

“The book is so experimental in so many ways - now that movies have the possibility of being non-linear, you have so many possibilities to do the book honor by attempting at it.,” he said. “You could not tell that novel if your filmic language was [strictly] academic.

“One of the main things is that you can do the juxtapositions of time because the way academic storytelling would tell you is that there are flashforwards and flashbacks,” he continued. “But the reality is the whole essence of the book is that the character is unstuck in time. Unstuck in time. So you do the implications of what that means, but you are really going into pushing narrative. You’re not watching a flashback and you’re not watching a flashforward.”

To accomplish that seamless visual, Del Toro is turning to new advances in digital technology, he said.

“And when I talk about digital effects please don’t imagine that pejoratively,” he added. “I talk about truly pushing narrative.”

Del Toro wouldn’t speak towards whether or not he planned on including the Vonnegutian narrator character as well - who talks in a lengthy opening about his troubles in writing the novel.

(Speaking Vonnegut, be sure to also read our previous report on the upcoming adaptation of his “Sirens of Titan.”)

Is Guillermo Del Toro the man to bring Vonnegut to the big-screen? Does his reading of the story’s framing resonate? Could the film, like the book, truly exist with just thematic connectors? Sound off on all your thoughts below. Poo-tee-weet?

As far as news goes, this posting isn’t about quantity so much as quality. Today, the studio behind “Twilight” has announced the film’s official runtime, and it is three numbers that should bring a smile to the face of Stephenie Meyer’s loyal fans: 120 minutes.

At various points during the film’s development, many have speculated that Catherine Hardwicke’s movie would run between 90 and 100 minutes, a typical length for most teen-oriented films. Since Meyer’s novel stands it at about 500 pages, concerns had naturally been raised over which beloved moments would need to be cut.

With this news from Summit Entertainment, however, fans can find solace in knowing that the love story of Edward and Bella will be allowed a good two hours to develop. While we’re still not talking P.T. Anderson or Martin Scorsese length, 120 minutes is seen by most Hollywood insiders as long enough to tell a good story, but not so unwieldy that fewer showings need to be scheduled each day (thereby losing opening weekend revenue).

With “Twilight” in its final run before release, the film has unveiled its last “Twilight” trailer, “Twilight” poster, and “Twilight” theater-lobby banner in the last few days to a rapturous response from the vampire franchise’s rabid fanbase.

The film hits theaters November 21st, and fans have already begun efforts online to organize theater-sidewalk sleepovers in the days before it starts playing.

How do you feel about the runtime? In your opinion, which key “Twilight” scenes absolutely must make it into Catherine’s final cut?
